A Texas man has captured the internet’s attention after winning a bidding war for a guitar signed by Taylor Swift, only to subsequently destroy it with a hammer.
The incident, which quickly went viral across multiple social media platforms, depicts the man claiming the guitar after placing a winning bid of $4,000, and then proceeding to break the instrument into pieces.
“When the man announced his intention to smash it, everyone pulled out their cameras,” an eyewitness told The Independent.
This unforgettable moment occurred on September 28 at the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner in Waxahachie, Texas. The event served as a fundraiser aimed at promoting agricultural and rural education for the area’s youth.
Among the various auction items were tickets to see George Strait and Chris Stapleton, an African safari experience, a trip along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and, of course, the signed Taylor Swift guitar.
As the auction began for the Taylor Swift guitar, one attendee started the bidding at $3,200, while the event organizer confirmed that the final bid reached $4,000.
In the viral footage, the winning bidder can be seen making his way to the stage to collect the guitar. Upon grabbing the instrument, he is handed a hammer, which he immediately uses to smash the guitar.
Some viewers speculated that the man’s destruction of the guitar was a response to Swift’s recent endorsement of Kamala Harris; however, TMZ reports that the guitar was donated prior to Swift’s announcement.
The man’s actions have ignited a spirited discussion online, with opinions divided—some users praising his bold move, while others lament that he should have donated his money directly to charity.
“What a waste of money,” one commenter expressed.
“It wasn’t a waste at all! The $4,000 he spent went to a good cause. The proceeds from the dinner support the Future Farmers of America,” another countered.
