The “Top Gun” actor has died at 65.
Val Kilmer has died at age 65. His daughter, Mercedes, told the New York Times that he died of pneumonia on Tuesday, April 1. In the interview, she explained that while he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, he later made a full recovery.
In 2017, Kilmer spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about living with throat cancer. He stated that the cancer had “taken its toll” on his body and that his voice was left “raspy” after undergoing a tracheostomy.
Later on in the interview, Kilmer reflected on the highs and lows of his career, stating, “I’d get upset when things like Oscars and recognition failed to come my way. I would like to have more Oscars than anybody… It’s about being loved.”
Kilmer was father to two children: Jack, 29, and Mercedes, 33. In 2020, Mercedes made her acting debut opposite her father in the movie, “Paydirt.”
Kilmer told People at the time, “The producer called me up and asked me if I would play this role and I said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve found anybody yet to play my daughter, but I might have someone for you. Her name is Mercedes Kilmer and perhaps you’d be interested in meeting with her. Mercedes and the producer met and they all had a ball.”
Kilmer was known for movies like “Top Gun,” and “Heat,” among others. He played the role of Batman in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever” in 1995. His final credit is listed as “Top Gun: Maverick.” According to IMDb, Kilmer had a film one development titled Mark Twain and Mary Baker Eddy, though no public updates have been shared about its progress.
Kilmer was married to English film and television actress Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996.
