Rapper Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., a.k.a. Lil Wayne, picked his hip-hop fantasy football squad. The Lollipop rapper was asked to outline his roster during his appearance on Steelers defensive lineman, Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast earlier this month.
For the uninitiated, fantasy football is a game where participants assemble an imaginary team of real-life players. Points are awarded based on the real-world performances of the selected players, and the participant with the most points wins. Weezy was asked to draft a line-up composed of rappers.
Carter, known for his rap prowess as well as his love for sports, made some interesting picks for his squad, which included Drake (no surprise there), Beanie Sigel, Future, Post Malone, 50 Cent, and 2 Chainz.
“Jay-Z is Tom Brady, he’s just retired” — Lil Wayne picks his hip-hop fantasy football team
The New Orleans-born musician began by noting that he (Weezy) would be the coach of his team. As for the quarterback, Lil Wayne explained that he needed a “thinker, someone that can oversee everything and make everybody feel great about themselves.” He reasoned that the artist should be able to work with everybody and have multiple skills. He continued:
“I gotta go with my dawg, the 6ix God, as the quarterback. Champagne Papi. We’re going with Drizzy as the quarterback.”
The Annihilate rapper pointed out that Jay-Z is not on his team, comparing him with Tom Brady (the former Patriots quarterback is regarded as one of the greatest QBs).
“Cuz also, Jay would be Tom Brady, so Jay(’s) not in this… JAY-Z is Tom Brady, he’s just retired. He’s got a new job coming up, he’s making $300 million, he’s gonna be okay.”
Next in his fantasy squad, Weezy chose Beanie Sigel as his running back. He reasoned that a running back must be tough and hardened. Moving on to the wide receiver, the rapper explained they needed someone “flamboyant” and “swaggy.” Praising Future’s vocal range, he remarked:
“We going Future. Future’s tall, and also, he coulda been quarterback. You know how the wide receiver can come in and play quarterback at times.”
In addition to the superhero musician, Lil Wayne also named another tall rapper, 2 Chainz, as his wide receiver. Carter explained that Chainz played basketball, so he “could jump.” For his linebacker, Weezy mentioned that he needed someone who is “white boy crazy.” He added:
“Need them to be white boy crazy. Eye black just makes no more sense. We going Post Malone. You see all the tattoos and the grill, yeah. He remind me of (Maxx) Crosby.”
Lil Wayne named The Game and 50 Cent as his left and right linebackers, respectively.
Despite choosing some of his best hip-hop contemporaries, some of them have a rough relationship in real life. This includes The Game and 50 Cent’s famous rivalry, and Drake’s ongoing beef with Future.
