Goalkeeper Andre Onana made two incredible saves during the 1-1 draw between Fenerbahce and Manchester United in the Europa League. Even opposing coach Jose Mourinho was shocked by these moments.
In the 37th minute of the match between Fenerbahce and Manchester United, Youssef En Nesyri received the ball from a teammate and made two close-range headers in quick succession. However, Andre Onana managed to react in time to keep Manchester United from conceding.
On the sidelines, Jose Mourinho was ready to celebrate but showed clear astonishment at Onana’s spectacular saves. After the first half ended, the former Manchester United manager even met with Onana in the tunnel to praise the former Inter Milan star.
During the match against Fenerbahce, Onana made four crucial saves against the home team’s attempts, only being beaten by another close-range header from En Nesyri at the start of the second half.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Mourinho stated: “I think he was the key player in this match. Onana might not have made 20 saves, but there were two unbelievable saves. Fenerbahce played better, so this result is reasonable for Manchester United.”
“Onana made two amazing saves. While my goalkeeper couldn’t stop a difficult shot, he denied two goals in a matter of seconds. He was decisive in the outcome of this match.”
For his part, Onana remained humble and was dissatisfied with the draw: “The saves are not important; the most important thing is to win for the team. It would have been great if I made those saves and the team won. It’s a huge disappointment.”
The Cameroonian goalkeeper also analyzed the match’s progression: “We controlled the game better in the second half and had more opportunities. We conceded early in the second half, and we had to show our character, and I think that’s what we did. We didn’t win, but I believe we played better than them.”
Manchester United has now drawn three consecutive matches in the Europa League this season, placing them 21st out of 36 in the standings. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce is temporarily in 14th place with 5 points from 1 win and 2 draws.
