Fahteema Parrish is the owner of Parrish & Sons Construction, a thriving construction company located in Kansas City, Missouri. Her business stands out as the first Black woman-owned construction company to win the prestigious KC Chamber Mr. K Small Business of the Year award in June 2023, marking a significant milestone in the award’s 36-year history.
With over ten years of experience in the construction industry, Parrish’s firm specializes in excavation, grading, and demolition. Notable projects include the Three Light Tower and KCI Airport.
Parrish’s journey into construction was not typical. She previously worked as a software engineer and explored various ventures including barbering and property management. Despite the challenges of transitioning from the tech sector—a field also dominated by men—into construction, she credits her resilience and determination for her success.
Her entrepreneurial spirit was influenced by her upbringing; her father runs an HVAC company, inspiring her to build her own legacy. She acknowledges the difficulties in navigating male-dominated industries but emphasizes the importance of perseverance.
In addition to her business achievements, Parrish actively mentors young people through organizations like the Full Employment Council and Awesome Ambitions. Recently, she received certification as a National Standard General Building Contractor, reflecting her commitment to professional growth.
Parrish’s message to aspiring entrepreneurs is clear: “Stay the course. Growth and comfort, they cannot coexist. Be okay trying, and be okay failing. But choosing to fail forward and learn from that.” Her company name honors her husband and sons, symbolizing the legacy she aims to create.
