A Tomb Raider TV Series is coming from Amazon Prime Video

Amazon is launching a  Tomb Raider  TV series that is shared with a film and has a potential classic game plot adaptation.

Amazon’s Prime Video has revealed plans for a new series inspired by the beloved  Tomb Raider video game franchise, as part of a partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios. Since its debut in 1996 on the Sega Saturn and Playstation, the  Tomb Raider series has captivated audiences, following archaeologist Lara Croft as she utilizes her expertise to uncover lost artifacts and navigate perilous tombs worldwide. The franchise has solidified Croft as an iconic figure among video game mascots with numerous sequels.

Tomb Raider quickly transitioned to other media formats, with a feature film released in 2001 starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. The movie was a success, prompting a sequel in 2003. However, Jolie’s departure from the role led to a pause for the big-screen franchise for over a decade. In 2018,  Tomb Raider was rebooted with Alicia Vikander taking on the role of Lara Croft. Despite plans for a sequel to the 2018 film falling through, the  Tomb Raider film and  TV franchise remained inactive until the recent announcement of an upcoming  TV series, which will coexist in a shared universe with Amazon’s new film.

Tomb Raider TV Series Is Officially Green-Lit

Though there wasn’t much uncertainty about the project, the latest update confirms that Amazon has approved the  Tomb Raider series (as reported by Variety). This news comes after more than six months since the project was announced as being in development, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge onboard as executive producer and writer, along with Megan McDonnell, writer of The Marvels. The green light marks an exciting progression for the project, which has seen little movement since it was initially teased a year ago.

In addition to confirming the  Tomb Raider show, Amazon made an even bigger move by announcing a broader  Tomb Raider universe. Alongside the Phoebe Waller-Bridge series bringing Lara Croft back to  TV, Amazon is also creating a Tomb Raider reboot film set in the same timeline as the show. While specifics about their connection remain unclear, the idea is an exciting expansion of the beloved intellectual property.

The Tomb Raider TV Show Story Details

While the plot for the Tomb Raider  TV series hasn’t been revealed yet, viewers can anticipate plenty of thrilling action. Croft is renowned for her use of dual pistols, and she’ll probably encounter dangers that extend beyond ancient tombs’ pitfalls and traps. Additionally, with Waller-Bridge on board, some humor is likely to be sprinkled throughout the dialogue.

While it hasn’t been confirmed, the series might delve into the storylines of classic video games, which could appeal to longtime fans. The older games were simpler, but newer ones offer exciting mysteries for the  Tomb Raider show to explore. Even if the series decides on a completely new story, it could benefit from drawing inspiration from its source material.

The Cast

The key element of the upcoming Prime Video adaptation of  Tomb Raider will be selecting the perfect actor to portray Lara Croft. The adventurous hero has been a staple of video games for almost thirty years and has appeared on the big screen twice. Previously, Angelina Jolie and then Alicia Vikander played the role, each portraying distinct versions of the character.

The show will require someone who can embody a diverse range of qualities to play the role. They’ll need to recreate the natural action and adventure of the original games as Croft faces challenges worldwide. The ideal performer will keep the character grounded amid the franchise’s bombastic elements. Additionally, they should reflect the grittier, more grounded approach seen in recent games in the series.

Daisy Ridley Up For Tomb Raider Reboot’s Lara Croft

Rumors suggest that Daisy Ridley, known for her role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is being considered for the role of Lara Croft. However, according to the Deadline report, there have been no official negotiations, and no offer has been made yet.

Daisy Ridley has demonstrated her capability to lead a major franchise through her portrayal of Rey in the Star Wars sequels. Her performance showcased her ability to deliver convincing action scenes while maintaining her dramatic depth. Notably, Rey’s character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was introduced as a scavenger and survivor, which could translate well to the role of Lara Croft in a  Tomb Raider adaptation. The character’s journey often involves exploring lost tombs to uncover treasures and artifacts, a task that Ridley’s experience could suitably prepare her for.
