One Piece: Luffy Might Have the Will of D, but 1 Straw Hat Pirate Has a Deeper Link to the Pirate King Gol D. Roger

Nami’s backstory in the Arlong Park Arc isn’t enough for One Piece fans who are aching to know who her biological parents with a bizarre theory.

In the 25 years that One Piece has been airing, it’s been established each of the Straw Hat Pirates has something special going on about them. Whether it’s having a powerful descendant bearing the Will of D. or declaring war against the World Government, the crew will shake the world with their combined greatness.

So despite having a backstory, fans question whether Nami’s entire past hasn’t been revealed just yet. It could be a Sanji situation where we thought the Baratie Arc revealed his full story, only for Whole Cake Island to unveil more trauma.

Nami’s heritage still remains a mystery and is the centre of many theories. One Piece fans have noticed a connection between the navigator and a member of a legendary crew.

While this theory makes a lot of assumptions, fans have clearly put a lot of thought into it, perhaps too much. Gol D. Roger’s crew is filled with mysterious people, including a man named Spencer. His appearance is strikingly similar to Nami’s orange hair and smile. This theory also potentially ties him to the famous reporter in the series, “Big News” Morgans. Could Nami’s biological heritage finally be revealing the Final Saga of One Piece?

Spencer is more of a background character amongst the Roger Pirates who hasn’t been given much significance in comparison to Silvers Rayleigh or the more mysterious Scopper Gaban. Eiichiro Oda has possibly not given much thought to his character as even his hair changes color, varying between red and Nami’s orange hair.

In frames where he has orange hair, however, he looks like a male version of Nami. This isn’t the only hint given towards their connection as Oda doesn’t leave much up to coincidence in One Piece, especially with wordplay for the Roger Pirates.

What’s more interesting is the crewmate’s name. A trysail, often also known as a spencer, is a small triangular sail hoisted when winds are very high. So his name is also linked to navigation, which Nami excels at. Moreover, the meaning behind the name Spencer also means “dispenser of provisions,” and curiously, Nami is the one who hands out allowances to the Straw Hats. This theory, however, goes even further and states that the Roger Pirate is now Morgans. Where did fans even get that idea?

Fans have debated about Morgans’ real identity, focusing on either Spencer or Momora as potential candidates. So, let’s humor the idea that Morgans is Spencer. The albatross journalist has a lot in common with Nami. To begin with, they’re both greedy but maintain integrity where it matters.

Since we know nothing about the Roger Pirate, his personality is essentially a blank slate and he could be greedy but proud like Morgans. The navigator is also seen with an albatross on Chapter 49’s chapter cover. Is it all a coincidence?

Does Nami’s Biological Heritage Really Matter?

One Piece has always emphasized the importance of found family. Luffy’s brotherhood with Ace and Sabo was already tearjerking but so was Nami’s past with Bell-mère and Nojiko. Bell-mère found the two in the aftermath of the Oykot Kingdom’s war and died protecting them later. Despite not being their biological mother, she was their real mother in every way that mattered.

Thus, it isn’t important to ever find out Nami’s real heritage. Besides, who says repeating this will have the same effect as Sanji’s in Whole Cake Island? Nami has had her backstory moment that changed the course of One Piece and Luffy’s journey and that legacy should remain that way.
