One Piece: Why Did Roger Laugh At Laugh Tale Theories, Explained

One Piece has some bizarre mysteries. Many things that would be considered unimportant in another anime, in One Piece, spark lengthy debates on how this subtle detail fits into the hidden history of the world. Every line seems to be oozing with story significance, just waiting to be analyzed by fans.

One such moment is Roger’s actions on the final island of One Piece Grand Line, Laugh Tale. On this island, the former Pirate King did something that completely shocked and amazed the entire One Piece community; he laughed. This simple action has ignited countless fan theories that delve into the reasons that would cause Roger to laugh during this momentous occasion.

The Roger Pirate’s Found Joyboy’s Treasure In One Piece

And They Laughed

As Oden recounts his adventures with the Roger Pirates in One Piece, the samurai recounts their journey to the final island of the Grand Line. This island, which hasn’t been visited in 800 years by another pirate, is where the group found the mysterious treasure of Joyboy that was left so many years ago. However, whatever was left behind, rather than eliciting another reaction, simply made Roger, as well as the rest of his crew, laugh hysterically. From here, the crew decided to name the last island of the Grand Line, Laugh Tale.

He laughed – Oden

However, the reason why the One Piece crew burst out laughing is as mysterious as the treasure itself. While the King of Pirates, Roger, is a generally jovial person, he mentions that the treasure the Joyboy left behind was specifically meant to be funny in some way. Whether this means that Joyboy left it with the sole intention of being a joke or whether the treasure was only funny in retrospect is completely up to speculation.

The Roger Pirates May Have Been Too Early

A Treasure For The Future

One going theory for Roger laughing at One Piece’s Laugh Tale is due to the fact that the crew arrived on the island too early for the true purpose of the treasure to reveal itself. This caused the treasure to be ironically funny as the treasure would be useless to them and would need to be obtained by a future-generation pirate to fulfill some sort of prophecy. After this, it would make sense that Roger would hope his son, Ace, who may have the potential to unlock this treasure, would seek it out in the future.

Another theory mentions that the final island could also include a series of the One Piece Poneglyphs that detail the history of the world, with the last one being blank. Although they had reached the island, after reading the history, the crew may have realized that they weren’t the ones meant to be on the last page of One Piece’s history, so the crew, similarly, would only be left to laugh. Then, whoever reaches the island when the time is right, will be able to etch their journey onto the final Poneglyph, ending the story of One Piece.

Buggy May Be The Key To The Treasure

A Funny Twist

Yet another theory states that Buggy himself holds some sort of key that will help unify the One Piece world. This theory goes on to explain that because Buggy was left behind when the crew visited, the crew wasn’t able to utilize the abilities of the Chop-Chop Fruit in order to fully access the truth behind the island. Additionally, the theory goes on to state that Buggy may need to awaken his Devil Fruit in order to live up to his true potential in the history of One Piece.

You’re going to become the Pirate King? Then I’m God! – Buggy to Luffy

In the end, each of these theories would make for an interesting finale to One Piece and explain the reason for Roger laughing on Laugh Tale very well. It’s interesting to note that so far, many believe that Roger was laughing for an ironic reason on Laugh Tale and not at some specific joke that Joyboy left behind. No matter the reason so far, when the truth behind Laugh Tale is released down the line, hopefully, the hype of the island will live up to these amazing and fun One Piece fan theories.
